Other things become taken more seriously, such that many people now see the humor as *actually* harmful, and coming from a time that feels like the present. (And puns are funny to people who care enough about language that twisting it tweaks their sense of transgression.) Humor involving bodily functions and the like are evergreen-they're always going to be mildly transgressive/offensive/disgusting-but-not-true (though some people are going to have more serious issues with it and not be able to find it funny, while other people are just going to be tired of it).Īll that being said, it makes sense that there could be a window in which the humor will be maximally dated-as standards shift, some things are going to move from transgressive to not-transgressive and then the fact that they're being played for humor just comes across as pointless.
If they are safely "other" then bad things happening to them, or a sympathetic character having bad things happen but in a ridiculous way, those can be funny. If you're sympathizing with a character and they get hurt in a realistic way, that's not funny. It engages your sense of danger or wrongness, then defuses it. The usual theory of humor I see is that it's basically something that's transgressive/dangerous, but not *really* dangerous.
